Messages of Speaker NA of Pakistan on First International Day of Democracy

Dr. Fehmida Mirza, Speaker National Assembly of Pakistan

Democracy is a universal value based on the freely expressed will of the people to determine their own political, economic, social and cultural system and their full participations in all aspects of life. In order to achieve this objective, it is incumbent upon the political leadership to shun their political differences and join hands to strengthen the democratic process in the country.

Democracy, peace, development and respect for human rights are inter-dependent phenomenas and therefore, it is imperative for democracy to flourish. And the involvement of the people in public affairs of the country ensures basic freedom and equality, fulfillment of the needs of people and preserve or restore peace.

The ultimate goal of democracy is to preserve and promote the dignity and fundamental rights of the individuals, to achieve social justice, foster the economic and social development of the community; strengthen the cohesion of society and building a propitious environment for international peace. Continuous electoral process ensures a democratic dispensation in the country.

Shaheed Mohtarma Benazir Bhutto, embraced martyrdom in her struggle for restoration of democracy and rights of the people. Her mission would be carried forward till the complete restoration of democratic dispensation in the country. The transition of democratic process in Pakistan has been completed after the election of the President. Today we are confident that the public representatives would come-up to the expectations of their electorates.
